Again, the goal isn't to make every exercise unnecessarily complicated.
It is to improve the quality of the positions that are currently limiting you.

Sometimes the resistance profile of the exercise simply doesn't match what you are trying to accomplish.
This is where having multiple exercise options becomes valuable.
Different equipment can challenge muscles differently.
A dumbbell exercise may be hardest in one portion of the range of motion.
A cable version may distribute resistance differently.
A machine may provide a resistance curve that better matches your strength through the movement.
This doesn't mean machines are automatically better than free weights or that one variation is universally superior.

That makes your logbook much more useful.
Ten repetitions this week and 11 repetitions next week only represent clear progress if the repetitions are performed in roughly the same way.

A sticking point isn't just an obstacle.
It's feedback.
It can show you where your control begins to disappear.
It can show you where another muscle starts compensating.
It can show you whether your setup is stable.
It can show you whether your current load is appropriate.
Instead of getting frustrated when you struggle at a certain portion of an exercise, treat that struggle as information.
Ask yourself:
Where did the repetition slow down?
What changed when I became fatigued?
Did I maintain the same range of motion?
Did I feel the target muscle throughout the difficult portion?
Was I able to maintain my setup?
Those questions often provide more useful hypertrophy information than simply asking whether the set was hard.
Better Repetitions Can Be Progressive Overload
There is a tendency to believe that progression must always be visible in the form of heavier weights or additional repetitions.
But improving your weakest position is also progression.
Maybe you use the same weight as last month, but now you can control the stretched position better.
Maybe your sticking point occurs later in the set.
Maybe you no longer need momentum to complete the final two repetitions.
Maybe your range of motion stays consistent when you approach failure.
Maybe the same set feels more stable and controlled.
Those improvements matter.
